The film opens with Vikram's twin brother recounting events. The film's first half is narrated by Vikram's twin brother. While these events fill the majority of the movie, there are also some romantic moments. The film is choppy in its first half because these romantic interludes interrupt the action and make it difficult to get the rhythm moving. Although the missions to capture Point 5140 or 4875 do give the film some momentum, it is not enough to save the film. Shershaah is also prone to poor characterization. Vikram Batra is a hero so there is an inherent empathy and appreciation for him. However, the film cannot make Vikram Batra relatable or humanize him. We do see him interact with his family and his comrades, but it's mostly superficial. His interactions with his girlfriend are marked by cheesy Bollywood-style dialogues.
Sidharth Malhotra is miscast in this role as a young, feisty man who enjoys making jokes. He is an average actor, and while this is fine for depicting suave-young-men-about-town (I quite liked his performance in Kapoor & Sons), Batra's character needed to be essayed with some heft. He also struggles to carry the comedy overtures. Kiara Advani plays Dimple, Cheema's love interest. Advani is versatile, as we saw her in . However, she is limited by poor writing. The character she portrays is thin and lacks the classic Bollywood melodrama.
The film's most moving scene was the one towards the end. It featured the traditional Army salute for a fallen soldier. We see the grieving family mourning their 25-year-old son, Batra. His casket is wrapped in the Indian tricolor. It was difficult to see all the casualties of war.
