Amazon Prime's Ray can be viewed as an anthology, or as a series of four episodes. Each episode is a short film of 1 hour directed by one or more directors. These 4 films were inspired by SatyajitRay's short stories. They are not my favorite stories, so I don't know how much the films are based. They were dark, grimy, philosophical, and inward-looking. That's fine. They are weak, though. I'm not sure if it's the stories or how they were adapted. Ray won't make it to the Best Anthologies of 2020.Manoj Bajpayee, as well as Gajraj Rao, are both wonderful actors. The film is beautifully shot and has subtle nuances. We sympathize with these men, and we watch them fallible.
Here are the remaining episodes. The first film in the series is Forget Me Not. It's about Ipsit Rama Naair, a technical nerd who begins to lose his memory. He is then unnerved. We see him poised for success, admirated by all, and in awe of many. He is a friend of many, and a dynamic, successful go-getter. Then, he shows uncharacteristic forgetfulness! It begins to bite at Ipsit.
Srijit Mukherjee directs Forget Me Not. Ali Fazal played Ipsit in this film. He is a decent actor and does a good job. It is about poetic justice and having your chickens return to their nests, so you will be interested. Mukherji also layers characters well; we initially see the outward projection. But Mukherji gradually peels back the layers and reveals the truth. Forget Me Not was a passable film.
The second film, Bahrupiya, is my favorite. It's absolutely incredible. Indrashish Shah is an office worker who has a creative side. This story shows how he inherits an interesting inheritance. On the death of his eccentric, creative grandmother, Indrashish Shah was left a treasure trove full of books and tools about prosthetics. These are used by Indrashish to conceal himself and conduct a few social experiments. Kay Kay Menon plays Indrashish. While Kaykay is an excellent actor, his masks made it difficult to see his emotions. Although his character is complex and troubled, we only see him from a distance. The film cannot make him relatable or real.
