Little Women: Little Women Full Movie Review:
A writer, sketch artist, aspiring actress , and a budding pianist. Four March sisters have the ability to be unique, but they are living in a time when the only options to women is marriage or death. Director and writer Greta Gerwig is the main character in an episode in which the protagonist of the film Jo (Saoirse Ronan) is trying to sell her debut story to the editor of a newspaper.
In the very beginning scene Gerwig succeeds in establishing the shocking prejudice Jo faces as an individual woman. However, this isn't a damper for Jo who's ferocious determination to pursue her goals and be independent is a strong message for women in the present.
The film is set in the 1800s. Jo's character is rare and Ronan perfectly conveys the essence of Jo. Her performance is certainly an one of the films positives. Ronan does not miss a beat in capturing Jo's internal struggles in vulnerability and conflict as she carries towards her goals and overcome every odds. It's the most compelling thread that runs through all female characters of the period drama, which is grounded in real-life. Emma Watson plays Meg March with such dignity that you can feel her pain, without over-the-top dramatics. Eliza Scanlen's portrayal as Elizabeth is as calm even though she has less screen time and dialogue. But, the most impressive performance is Florence Pugh, who gets to play an impressive arch as Amy. She effortlessly balances Amy's change from a spoilt and bratty sister to a confident woman who is able to stand up for herself. Meryl Streep's performance as the stern or direct Aunt March is a hoot that leaves us wanting more. Laura Dern exudes motherly warmth as the caring Marmee March. In the males, Timothee Chalamet embodies the perfect degree of boyish charm to her character Laurie who is in love by Jo however, she is intelligent enough to know the realities of the world around her.
