After having a breakup with the Joker, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) quickly realizes she's no longer safe from the criminals from Gotham City. In addition to a slew of people she scolded and is also pursued by the sexist and obnoxious Gangster Roman Sionis or Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) together with Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina). In addition, a girl named Cassandra (Ella Jay Basco) finds herself within Harley's chaos and is accompanied by Renee Montaya (Rosie Perez), Dinah Lance (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Helena Bertinelli (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). The ladies must band together to stand a chances in the fight against Black Mask and his goons.
From the very beginning it's clear that the film's tone and colour palette is vibrant and deliberately erratic. Director Cathy Yan's style draws from other raunchy action and superhero films before it, but retains a thrilling malevolent tone that is its own. The film conveys this through characters as well as action sets production design, and humor. In bringing this idea to life a talented ensemble with the captivating Margot Robbie in the lead role. She is a riot of passion that is Harley Quinn, putting all the characters eccentricities to the test while also being incredibly compelling. Jurnee Smollett-Bell is an absolute delight as Dinah Lanceand the Black Canary, showing emotional depth. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a scene stealer in Helena Bertinelli/ Huntress. Ewan McGregor loves playing the sinister Black Mask to make a terrifying villain suitable for the film.
Alongside the director, the acknowledgement goes to the the writer Christina Hodson for setting the female-centric narrative style without any need for a clear feminist perspective. While the female characters are prominent, some beats seem a bit off now and every now and then, and screen time isn't provided to the entire group. The well-choreographed action that is performed by the 'John Wick director Chad Stahelski is stunning to behold and ranks among the top action sequences in comic book movies to this point. All of these elements make "Birds Of Prey" hilarious, humorous extravagant, and thrillingly violent comic book movie which is an absolute blast to watch. Get the sequel greenlit now!
