Greenland: Greenland Full Movie Review:
John Garrity (Gerard Butler) isn't having the best day due to his difficult relationship with wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) and his seven-year-old son who is diabetic. However, their lives are set to change drastically when a deadly comet is set to strike earth. As with many others in the world, the Garritys are watching the latest news about the rapidly moving doomsday story on television, however the catastrophe will be more close to home when they are in their own area. The ray of light comes from an official message from the government that states the Garritys are selected for secure travel to an unidentified military site. They are urged to go to the nearest military base. Even their family members are left wondering why the Garritys are chosen to be the ones. With no qualms about the people who are less fortunate, John Garrity immediately gets moving. He is oblivious to the requests of their friend to bring her child along since the message clearly declares that his family members are chosen. After a few attempts to avoid the traffic and the raging looting along the way the Garritys reach the base of the military however they discover the insulin package was left in the vehicle. John comes back with the insulin pack and discovers their son and wife were been denied entry due to his son's ongoing diabetes. All of this is revealed thrillingly in the opening minutes. From then on, directors Ric Roman Waugh as well as writer Chris Sparling provide the audience with an insight into not only the impending doom but reveal one of the strongest human responses to a disaster that's this large. While the story delves into the realities of surviving the aftermath of a catastrophe, they create the drama and tension that follows. However, none of this is overly dramatic to distract on the story of an ordinary American family struggling to get through the most difficult day of their life. The tragedy itself is never overshadowed by the human tragedy - either visually or even virtually. The sound effects and GFX are subtle, but the feeling is real.
The story is realistic and enough to convey the bleak circumstances that bring the worst out of people. Gerard Butler is restrained and not heroic as the character, who shifts from being the person who is chosen to one who is afraid of losing everything. Morena Baccarin also evokes an emotion of motherhood determined to save her vulnerable son. Roger Dale Floyd (as Nathan) depicts his vulnerability as a young child who is always at risk, but is also capable of recognizing the severity of the circumstance.
