Chhapaak: Chhapaak Full Movie Review:
Meghna Gulzar's "Chhapaak" is inspired by the tale of an actual acid attack victim, Laxmi Agarwal who has become a symbol for determination and strength for many women. This film is fictionalized version featuring Deepika Padukone as the main character Malti who is slain in the open street in Delhi by a relative to the family Bashir Khan nicknamed Babbu and his accomplice.
The narrative follows an non-linear course beginning with Malti as she goes seeking a new job, conscious of moving on to heal the psychological scars the crime of a lifetime caused her. To heal the physical wounds she's had to endure a series of complex operations. It's true that she is far removed from the fantasies she had of becoming an artist the way she lives her life now is an interplay of her work for an NGO that assists Acid victims as well as her numerous surgeries, and legal battles. The film, however, does not indulge in melodrama or manipulation, instead giving us a strong character who's fight for her life is highlighted by her strong smile, the tears in her eyes, and her unstoppable spirit.
The support of her family decreases due to her brother's illness as well as her the loss of her father, it's her lawyer, Archana (Madhurjeet Sarghi) who is there to support her throughout her long and difficult journey. In Malti's PIL to prohibit sales of acids, to changes to the law on acid violence, her legal team of women will take on the system. Her main source of assistance comes from Amol (Vikrant Massey) who has hired her to work with his NGO.
Deepika Padukone is the soul of the film, providing an incredible, immersive performance. In actuality there are numerous moments where her acting can make you cry for example, when she puts an earring in front of her face, only to realize she's not able to put it on. Then there's her heart-breaking cry when she is able to see her face first time in the mirror following the attack. One where she firmly says to Amol, "Mujhe party karni hain." The reason what makes Malti's character an absolute winner, as she does not allow herself to be a victim of self-pity. As Deepika is completely in love with her character and transforms her character, she is able to do so with the help of prosthetics that are effective. With no hint of elegance, all we get only Malti throughout.
The duo of Vikrant Massey as well as Madhurjeet Saghri give excellent performances. The story conveys an important message and is definitely an ambitious effort, however the editing seems to be choppy at times, and certain sections of the story feel a bit stretched in the second part. Its music track stands out, with the title track 'Chhapaak' and "Nok Jhok" (soundtrack composed by Shankar Ehsaan-Loy and lyrics written by Gulzar) contributing to the emotional mood.
