Chhalang: Chhalang Full Movie Review:
Mahinder Singh aka Montu (Rajkummar Rao) is a lazy slacker. From waking up early before the sun rises to chatting in the company of his older chum Masterji (Saurabh Shukla), Montu is a slacker with no purpose in his daily life. He's incredibly lazy at his job as an PT instructor at the school he attends, and was only a result of his dad (Satish Kaushik) advised him to the school's principal (Ila Arun). If he's not roaming with Masterji and his gang, he's acting as a moral policeman, handing the punishment in a flash to space-deprived couples who are celebrating Valentine's Day. In one self-assigned patrol the policeman catches an elderly couple, believing they're playing around. He also accuses them of having their photo published in the local paper. However, as fate will have it their daughter Neelima known as Neelu (Nushrratt Bharuccha) ends in this same high school, as the computer instructor. When Montu immediately begins to adore the girl, Neelu is obviously quite unhappy with her. The result is a nafrat the pehli seedi type of situation . Anyone who's seen at least two Bollywood films knows the outcome. The real story's twist begins with the introduction of a brand new PT trainer IM Singh (Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub). He rides a royal Enflied, Singh is literally the best version of Montu who can sweep away the poor man's nukri and chokri in one go. The moment comes when Montu realizes that he has to improve his performance or risk losing everything as well as his credibility. He declares a total sport war against Singh which also forces him the on the line his own abilities to instruct. As a result, from now on the conflict and sports action begins to take place.
It is ironic that the authors of "Chhalaang" (Luv Ranjan Aseem Arrora, and Zeishan Quadri) have never taken the leap of faith creating an adrenaline-inducing sporting spectacle. It also doesn't look into the details of an intimate love story. The film only flits around at the notion of creating one of a love triangle.
There are a few scenes from the second half which do add some spice to the action. Like all sports films"Chhalaang," also has a pre song montage (by Daler Mahendi) with the underdogs fighting during the build-up to the big day. Additionally, the scenes that use practical scenarios to impart physical education lessons to students are original and well-represented. But, as we know nothing about the young athletes, it's difficult to identify with the players. Instead of fully fleshed out characters it's all about making gender equality and women empowerment. It's a bit forced. There isn't a exuberant track, even when the story requires one.The most memorable track, 'Khair Na Karda' appears shortly before the credits start rolling.
Rajkummar Rao is good as always as the non-chalant PT teacher, however, his portrayal of the little-town boy next door is much too routine. Maybe it's because stories of remote India have become a major portion in his films. In addition, his stiffly still hair appears odd even when he's dirty on the soccer field. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, in his athletic attire and sporting a moustache is the perfect professional sports coach. And the same is true for the gorgeous Nushrratt Bharuccha who seems to improve with every film. As a modern-day, young woman Bharuccha's character is the constant vocal voice for reason. But it's the characters who inject the real-life realism to the story and add necessary comic relief. There is an outstanding Saurabh Shukla, accompanied with Ila Arun Satish Kaushik and an incredibly charming Baljinder Kaur. She plays Montu's mother in absolute sincerity.
