Richard Jewell: Richard Jewell Full Movie Review:
Richard Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser) is the security guard who saved a lot of lives when he spotted an unsavory package in the Centennial Olympic Park, just before it went off. Then, just after a short time Jewell was identified as the main suspect for the FBI who could have identified the suspect as a 'lone bomber.' Jewell went on to hire Watson Bryant (Sam Rockwell) as his lawyer in order to defend him against allegations. It follows the story of Richard Jewell prior to and after the blast and the way he transformed from a national hero to their antagonist.
Although it is based on real circumstances surrounding the bombing during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, Clint Eastwood's masterful direction provides the audience with a sense of tension. The audience is able to be familiar with Richard Jewell and also to be immersed in his mind. The screenplay depicts the overly obese guard through but it's difficult to shake off the persistent feeling of doubt. Was Jewell capable of committing this horrific crime? The doubt is expressed by FBI Agent Tom Shaw (Jon Hamm) and is subsequently uncovered by crime reporter Kathy Scruggs (Olivia Wilde) who later spreads the suspicion across the nation.
It's a harrowing experience to watch Jewell's trust in the uniform erodes as he learns how the FBI alter their positions to fit their story. Paul Walter Hauser's character is humanizes the character, and it's impossible not to sympathize with the character despite his overbearing tendencies to exaggerate his authority in reckless ways. Sam Rockwell gives another terrific performance as his wise lawyer, Bryant, often bringing humorous dark humor to proceedings. Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde are a sexy couple in the roles of Tom Shaw and Kathy Scruggs and Kathy Scruggs, respectively, whose ambitions overshadow their morals. Kathy Bates is heartbreaking as Richard's mother Bobi Jewell, who desires Richard's dream to be realized. Their performances are testament to the ability of Eastwood to create delicate, yet touching portrayals when he carefully weaves the story. "Richard Jewell" is slow-burn that explores how government and media can alter perceptions of people everywhere which makes it an important and timely film.
