Antebellum: Antebellum Full Movie Review:
With a dazzling opening sequence which is shot in slow-motion that appears to be a single film, the writer-director duo Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz have set the stage for a fascinating tale of terrors. The film takes us to an idyllic, green plantation of slaves in Louisiana and are shown how the white American Confederate soldiers have enslaved some black people. In colonial-era attire and robes, black slaves are renamed, are not allowed to speak unannounced or be brutally assaulted and killed when they fail to follow the rules. Eden (Janelle Monae) is a young black woman, is the epitome of rebellion But she is aware well that she has to wait for the perfect opportunity to escape. She has witnessed horrific killings of her kind by cruel white soldiers. Yet, even as the atrocities committed against their own are increasing the number of slaves from black slaves is being enslaved by the infantry. Here, Captain Jasper (Jack Huston), Elizabeth (Jena Malone) and Army General Blake Denton (Eric Lange) keep them in captivity and force them to walk.
The colonial setting as well as the feeling of intrigue created in the beginning are the main focuses of the story. As it moves towards the modern age there are more unexpected twists added, bringing the level of intrigue a couple of levels higher. While the racial inhumanities of the past are shown with a savage violence but it's the subtle discrimination and profiling that makes the film more real. The scenes are expertly executed with a dramatic building and non-linear storyline, which leaves the viewer in awe and captivated, in one go. Veronica has written a book "Shedding the Coping Persona' that examines the subject of class, gender and race. Despite being an accomplished female of African descent, she's still subject to a smattering of racism throughout her day-to-day life. The contrast between this contemporary discrimination and the brutality that was the norm in past times is enthrallingly presented with tension and suspense.
Actress turned singer Janelle Monae is a perfect persona in both of the time periods. She exudes the fear and determination of a woman who has been slighted and slammed due to her skin color. Gabourey Sidibe is a bit over the top as Veronica's loud, chirpy companion Dawn. As for the villains, it's Jack Huston as Captain Jasper and makes a mark. The rest come off as gross stereotypes of racist white people who are filled with an inexplicably hatred for people of color.
"Antebellum" is based on a simple idea that was popularized in the works of Nobel Prize winning American writer Willaim Faulkner that read, "Past never dies. It's never even gone. When it does this, the novel cleverly is a compelling social commentary, which combines the horrific past with the current the context of black lives.
