Relic: Relic Full Movie Review:
If Kay (Emily Mortimer) and Sam (Bella Heathcote) visit the home of Edna, they discover two extremely bizarre things. There are a lot of Post-it notes strewn across the furniture, as well as a an black substance that resembles mould that is visible on the walls. The look-up of Edna (Robyn Nevin) does not yield any results and she appears just the same way she'd disappeared. Edna is clearly confused and doesn't seem to be aware of her disappearance. Although her health check-up indicates that she's physically and mentally healthy, enough hints are offered to suggest that she might have Alzheimer's. Perhaps she is? Strange sounds and mysterious occurrences that emanate from the walls suggest some dark force that has taken over the home. For Kay and Sam Edna's unpredictable and unpredictable behavior is more of a cause for anxiety than the things they are unable to see. Kay decides to transfer Edna into an assisted-living facility located in Melbourne which is met with Sam's displeasure.
"Relic" isn't your typical horror film by any stretch of the imagination. There aren't any obvious jump scares, or attempts to make you feel scared by cheap thrills such as garish makeup or bloody encounters. No screamy and loud background score , or disorienting camera movements. Music composer Brian Reitzell and sound designer Robert Mackenzie work in tandem to create a subtle haunting sound.
Co-written and directed by Natalie Erika James keeps it in a slow-burn, with the dynamics of family relationships being a key element in the development of the story. The mother-daughter dynamic among these three ladies is incredibly appealing and well-written.
The majority of the action is set in the confines of Edna's strangely large house as well as within the minds of its characters. However, this isn't one of those gruelling fictional horror stories, in which the viewers are constantly and intentionally lost between reality and the imagination.
With only three main characters it's easier to concentrate on each of them. Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote are a wonderful mother-daughter duo with different views regarding Edna. Mortimer is convincing in her role as the girl who is devoted to her mother, however, she must be able to reason for her own benefit. Heathcote plays her flawlessly with the idealistic character of a granddaughter who is unable to comprehend the logic behind the choice her mother makes about her mother. However, it's Robyn Nevin's experience and expertise which enhances the film's overall impact. She is in top character as grieving widower and a lonely mother. She is also an uneasy soul struggling with physical and mental ailments.
