Palasa 1978: Palasa 1978 Full Movie Review:
The process of drawing inspiration from true situations and presenting them in a film by striking the right equilibrium between ideology and intensity is a real test for filmmakers. And in Palasa, Karuna Kumar has done a great job at it. In keeping with the story he hopes to convey, the newcomer has delivered an excellent crime drama based around the subject of oppression against castes.
Mohan Rao (Rakshit) has killed Ganapa Vasu in a festival procession, and then went to hide. Dandasi (Laxman) starts narrating his story about Mohan Rao and his brother Ranga Rao (Thiruveer) Two happy brothers from a Dalit artistic family who sings and dances during their spare time. They also work as laborers elsewhere in the cashew-nut industry. Mohan Rao believes in fighting the oppression using his strength, and Ranga Rao is committed to holding the oppressors accountable. In the film, which is that takes place on the year 1978. The movie depicts how the two face the curse of caste discrimination and the loss of loved ones to the turmoil of family and regional political factions.
Palasa isn't your standard regular crime drama. It's an unusual film that has an excellent script, well-written dialogues (plus how they're delivered) and a screenplay. The way in which the society of that time depicted is well-executed. The description of the caste-based roles and the people's subversion of the caste system is beautifully stitched. Although it is a story that is fictional, Kumar never takes the freedom to turn the plot into a commercial space or add scenes just for entertainment. The film, however, isn't without its faults due to the minor slowdown in the second part of the film could be seen as one.
Thiruveer who gained attention for his role as an antagonist on George Reddy steals the show yet again. Raghu Kunche in the role of Chinna Dora Guru Murthy and Janardhan as Pedda Dora Linga Murthy shine in their roles, and their dialog delivery is worth a mention. Rakshit who is the epicenter of the story , is a good actor however, when compared to the others in the cast does not stand out in the comparison. Laxman, Nakshatra, Madhavi, Jagadeesh Prathap Bandari and Vijay performed admirably as characters, playing it to the max. Apart from his amazing performance as antagonist, Raghu Kunche sings some stunning folk tunes and a solid background score. Vincent Arul's cinematography is good.
The film focuses on the casteist character of the mainstream political system and the state, Palasa has a reference to the many atrocities that have been committed against Dalits across India. From honour killings to that of the Karamchedu Massacre or Rohit Vemula's suicide, the film speaks about all of them by focusing on Mohan Rao and Sebastian's characters. Palasa isn't a film that focuses on the utopian notion of changing the way in which bureaucracy is ruled. of Dalits into bureaucracy, however, it does show the way towards a desperately needed struggle to survive and be equal.
