Lockup: Lockup Full Movie Review:
A whodunit and debut novel SG Charles Lock Up doesn't require long to set up the setting and the characters. The film begins from start. The film opens by having Ilavarasi (Easwari Rao) is a police officer, being informed of the murder of a different cop, Sampath (Mime Gopi) in his luxurious home. The investigation gets underway quickly and leads to Murthy (Venkat Prabhu) who was the first one to head to the scene. A local goon who confessed to killing the cop is soon able to surrender and then reenacts the way he carried out the murder. Then, Ilavarasi finds discrepancies in the confession of the killer and begins gathering evidence related to the murder with the assistance of Murthy.
In the meantime, Vasanth (Vaibhav), an assistant to Murthy who was charged with the murder of a housekeeper and discovers that the death has a connection to the murder of the police officer. The murder of the goon who surrendered and a shocking revelation make the plot a bit tangled.
With the variety of characters and conflicting situations in the story there was a chance of narration going off the rails. However, the absence of apparent loopholes, and an engaging non-linear narrative that is constantly changing makes it a fascinating to watch. Certain characters that seem weak or poorly written at first, become pivotal during the second half due to their convincing character progression. Another benefit is the absence of any unnecessary divergence from the main story and the way in which unsolved subplots are linked in the final portion. The slightest attention to factors like production quality and lip-sync would have made this film more impressive.
Eeswari Rao who moves the story to the next level for quite a long time at the beginning, is a good actor. Also, Venkat Prabhu, whose character has a unique color that keeps the audience guessing until the very end. Vaibhav and Poorna give a good performance, while Vaani Bhojan isn't given much to offer. Cinematography from Santhanam Sekhar, editing by Anand Geraldin and music by Arrol Correli are prominent in a handful of scenes.
