V: V Full Movie Review:
The first day-first-show of the year after six months. That's what was going through many movie lovers in their minds when it was revealed that V will be released OTT. Even if the pandemic meant the experience of watching was altered however, people were keen to get popcorn and watch this cat-and-mouse chase as soon as it was released. The appeal that came with Mohan Krishna Indraganti making a crime thriller wasn't lost to everyone. But is the film worth the hype associated with it? Well...
DCP Adithya (Sudheer Babu) is a super-cop solving crime in Hyderabad. It's Hyderabad Times' Most Desirable man of 2019 and he beats criminals and races marathons by day, walks along the streets and has a nightclub party. His life is perfect particularly when the woman he loves as a crime novelist who is an aspiring writer named Apoorva Ramanujan (Nivetha Thomas) appears to love him just as well as he loves her and her family. A series of horrific murders perpetrated by a mysterious unidentified man (Nani) and accompanied by notes addressed to Adithya to throw a wrench at him and call him to up his game. What follows is a hunt that ends with a predictable conclusion.
Anyone who grew up with Indian crime-thrillers can sense the twists and turns in V that are one mile away. Even when Adithya raises his eyebrows throughout the film to determine what's happening while he talks about the situation with Apoorva the newly appointed advisor regardless of the efforts made by the producers to dispel suspicion about particular characters, you know how the film is going to play out. The songs of Amit Trivedi are inserted at the right time to establish the mood (romantic mostly) in a film you'll just wish that it was more polished. For an actor who speaks about how girls don't have to be only about frilly pink things and such, Apoorva sure isn't given the opportunity to shine or even do anything.
However, not all is lost because Nani is on hand to bring the day back to life. With glowing skin and tanned green eyes shining the character has its own spot in the spotlight. The scenes of him playing with other passengers for low-cost thrills while he travels from Hyderabad to different destinations can become repetitive (we understand the point you're trying to make, there's why repeat it) Nani revels in his grey appearance. Nani even makes us laugh in some scenes, and brings the audience to tears with a convincing portrayal of his character as one who's damaged beyond repair. Nani is the sole ray to hope for a story that is sometimes sloppy. Nani even has some memorable moments and scenes, despite being the antagonist in the story.
Sudheer Babu can be seen as the super-cop character he portrays. He's convincing in action scenes, especially those which require him to wear dressed in a shirt. But his performance, especially in some important scenes, fails to leave a lasting impression. Nivetha Thomas, and Aditi Rao Hydari's roles possess potential, but they get lost in the amount of testosterone that is on display. They are both great characters that are basic and, after a certain point, appear to act as the role of catalysts in a story about two guys fighting each other out. Nivetha Thomas portrays her role in a dramatic flair and Aditi Rao is given a scene to showcase her acting abilities however that's all there is. PG Vinda's camerawork Thaman S's BGM, and Marthand K. Venkatesh's editing work do their best to hold the film together, and they well for the most part.
