The Green Knight is a fantasy drama that's based on the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain & the Green Knight". Two folk themes are featured in the legend: the exchanging of winnings and the beheading game. King Arthur's court (Sean Harris), has an unusual guest on New Year's Eve: a giant Green Knight (Ralph Ineson), with a stunning axe. The knight asks anyone in the court for help in striking him down, in return for the axe. He also demands that the knight return the favor in approximately a year and one day.
Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), volunteers to behead the Green Knight. Surprisingly, the Green Knight picks up his head and asks Sir Gawain to meet them at the Green Chapel within a year and one day. Then he leaves. The story continues with Gawain's adventure, his stay at a nearby castle a few more days before the final blow -- when he meets the Lord (Joel Edgerton), and the Lady (Alicia Vikander). And the final confrontation with the Green Knight.
