ATRANGI RE tells the story of a girl who falls in love with two men. Rinku Suryavanshi (Sara Ali Khan), lives in Siwan, Bihar. She is surrounded by her extended family. Rinku's parents were killed by her extended family when she was a little girl. Rinku has been in love with Sajjad (Akshay) for many years and has eloped multiple times with him. Her maternal grandmother, Seema Biswas, gets fed up after her latest failed elopement. She advises her family to get her married to any man, but preferably one from Bihar. Vishu (Dhanush), a man she sees in her town, is a member of her family. He is a medical student and has been to Siwan to attend a camp. He is already married to Mandakini, aka Mandy (Dimplehayati), and they are just days away from getting engaged. Rinku is abducted by his family and forced to marry Rinku. They book tickets for them to travel by train to Delhi the next day. Vishu, who is still in shock at the last night's developments, boarded the train. Rinku informs Vishu she is in love Sajjad, and that she will be leaving with him when she reaches Delhi. Vishu is relieved that it's a forced wedding, even for her. He eventually reaches Delhi where he studies. Rinku informs him that Sajjad went to Africa to study magic, and that he will return within 10 days. Vishu must leave for Madurai. He tells Rinku that he will stay at his hostel until Sajjad returns. She can also join him in Madurai for their engagement. Rinku accompany Vishu to Madurai, where Mandy and Vishu get engaged. Everything is going smoothly until Mandy stumbles upon Rinku and Vishu's wedding video. The rest of the film is about what happens next.
